BAYERISCH EISENSTEIN - THE CENTRE OF EUROPE |
|
The villlage, with a population of 1,000, lies directly on the border with the Czech Republic, neighbouring the Bavarian and Bohemian Forest National Parks. The village has been a popular tourist destination since the railway arrived in the late 19th century. It retains its peaceful atmosphere while offering a wide range of things to do in and around the village and further afield. Within the village there is the railway station itself, the only one in Europe divided between 2 countries (Germany and Czech Republic), with a photographic exhibition of the development of the railway since it was built to encourage trade between Bavaria and the Habsburg Empire, through 2 World wars and the Cold War until the opening of the border. The station also has an information centre covering the Bavarian and Bohemian Forests. The village has a local railway museum, a glass works with regular glass blowing demonstrations and a beautiful neo-baroque church dating from the early 1900s. There are tennis courts and mini golf and paths for walking and cycling in every direction. The Arber mountain, the highest in the Bavarian Forest, offers skiing, snowboarding and tobogganing in winter and walks in summer. The gondola operates 10 months of the years and there are several restaurants at the top as well as wonderful views in any season. Guests can choose from a range of hotels and guests houses, apartments and private rooms, restaurants, cafes and shops, making it possible to spend a relaxing holiday entirely within the village. For children, there is an extensive adventure playground. Bayerisch Eisenstein also has easy access by public transport and car (as well bus trips) to the villages and towns of the Bavarian Forest and Czech Republic. The Danube, Passau and Plzen can be reached within 1 hour. Regensburg, Prague, Munich, Salzburg and Czesky Krumlow can be reached within 2 hours. Visitors staying in accommodation in the village now receive a guest card for the length of their stay entitling them to free local use of buses and trains.
